Loop of OKX (Upton, NY) air and wet bulb temperature profiles from 1 Jan to 31 March 2015 illustrating frequent occurrence of temperature inversions. The plotted profiles extend from the surface to 5 km altitude. 5 km is chosen because strong temperature inversions become much less frequent above this level. Wet bulb temperature represents the very local environment of hydrometeors and helps to visualize changes in moisture with height (Kinzer and Gunn, 1951).
